There are so many things to consider when buying your new home that it can make your head spin.
Sometimes, especially in a competitive market when time is of the essence, buyers will feel the pressure to pick a house and not fully consider the ramifications down the road of the choice that they've made.
They may have gotten some of their basic needs met in the bells and whistles that the house may offer, and find in that moment that the ultimate desire to purchase a home makes it easy to look past issues that could detract from the home later on.
When buying a home, a simple rule of thumb should ultimately reign: focus on the things that will improve your quality of life.
Buyers will often make the mistake of honing in on the "must haves" of homes that can be renovated, rather than things that are impossible to change.
For example, they might like the price tag, larger size, and style of home in one town in the suburbs, though it's a long commute to and from work in a larger city every day, cutting into their free time in the evenings.
Maybe a condo that is closer to work that is more centrally located may be a better option. On the other hand, if they are a weekend-recreational-warrior and like to hike, boat, ski, or other outdoor activities, they're that much closer to those things on the weekend living in the suburbs.

Owning a large home isn't for everyone, and the enthusiasm and tolerance for the upkeep of it all should be considered. A smaller home, or a condo that is professionally maintained, may be the better option.

By focusing on the things that can't be changed, like the location and size of a home, you will find that the selection of homes gets smaller, and the decision on which one to buy is simplified.
